Does CBD Oil Help Neuropathic Pain?

Cannabidiol oil or CBD has been known to potentially alleviate symptoms of many common ailments. It is found to be a key ingredient in more than a thousand chemical compounds extracted from the cannabis plant.

Before we delve further into the details about the effectiveness of CBD oil, let’s talk about what neuropathic pain is.

What is Neuropathic Pain?

Neuropathic pain arises when there is damage or an injury to the nerves. It can lead to nausea, anxiety, joint inflammation, stiffness, and muscle spasms. It is mostly described as a feeling of pins and needles, having a burning sensation, and difficulty with sensing temperature.

Some of the most common causes of neuropathic pain include nerve damage, cancer, viral infection, alcoholism, diabetes, or it can also be a side effect of any medication.

If the cause of neuropathic pain is diabetes, nutritional deficiency, or alcohol abuse, then the healthcare professional would aim to recommend ways to treat these conditions and have them in sustained control. For example, they can prescribe you anti-epileptics, antidepressants, lidocaine patches, etc. However, there is also a likelihood that CBD oil may be used to treat nerve pain.

How Does CBD Oil Relieve Pain?

Humans have a biological system called the endocannabinoid system (ECS) that is in charge of receiving and translating signals from cannabinoids. ECS helps in regulating various functions in our body, such as immune system-related responses, pain, and sleep.

What CBD does is that it increases the compound, known as anandamide, responsible for regulating pain which in turn alleviates pain.

According to a study by NCBI, cannabis was used to treat seizures centuries ago. The study highlighted the fact that CBD in cannabis does not result in any psychoactive effects. It actually accounts for the promising treatment of seizures.

Furthermore, cannabidiol can also reduce inflammation in the nervous system, which can help people who suffer from any immune system response-related issues.

About CBD Oil

As mentioned above, CBD oil is derived from the cannabis plant.

Researchers have been closely studying the effects of using CBD oil for nerve pain and for many other conditions as well. For example, a study conducted on the effectiveness of CBD oil for symptomatic pain demonstrated that its application resulted in significant relief from pain and other uncomfortable sensations.

Furthermore, it proved to be an effective alternative as compared to other treatments of peripheral neuropathy.

Benefits of CBD Oil

CBD has been gaining attention from more people every day due to its calming effects. Some of the research-backed benefits of CBD Oil are:

Lessen Chronic Pain

In 2005, researchers found out that Sativex combined with CBD can provide relief from neuropathic pain. Two years later, researchers utilized the same medication for patients suffering from cancer pain and observed that they felt more at ease as compared to when they were showing no response to other medications.

Another study conducted in the US observed the impact of CBD on non-cancer patients suffering from peripheral neuropathy. They observed that there was a significant decrease in sharp pains and other symptoms such as inflation, numbness, and itchy sensations. It was also observed that there were no adverse side effects due to the usage of CBD.

Whereas, on the other hand, patients who were given the placebo did not experience any effect.

The reason why applying CBD topically has a much more pronounced effect concerning chronic pains is that it doesn’t affect any systematic issue and rather treats the localized area.

Reduce Anxiety and Depression

One of the major reasons that contribute to the widespread usage of CBD is its ability to instill calmness. For example, a study in the Brazilian journal of psychiatry talks about a test conducted on 57 men on their anxiety levels during a public speaking session.

Some of these men were given a placebo, whereas some received CBD ranging from 150-600mg. At the end of the session, it was observed that men who were given the placebo had higher levels of anxiety as compared to those who received 300 milligrams of CBD.

On the other hand, people who received 150mg and 600mg of CBD had much higher levels of anxiety than those who received 300 milligrams of CBD. Thus, this study indicates that while CBD is effective for reducing stress levels, the effect is very dependent on the amount of dosage.

Moreover, it was also found that CBD has an antidepressant reaction that can induce calmness and reduce depression or anxiety.

Treat Seizures

In a trial of about 500 patients suffering from two of the rarest forms of epilepsy, Lennox Gastaut and Dravet Syndrome, CBD was found to have decreased the number or frequency of seizures in a patient.

Patients who were given a placebo saw no effect on their seizures whatsoever.

In the year 2018, FDA, Food and Drug Administration, approved a CBD product called Epidiolex that can be used for the treatment of epileptic seizures. In addition, if this medication was paired with others, the impact would be much better.

Minimize Post Traumatic Stress Disorder-PTSD Symptoms

The Journal of Alternative care and complementary medicine discusses a study in which 11 people suffering from post-traumatic stress disorder-PTSD- were provided CBD along with regular psychiatric care for two months. As a result, ten of those people experienced lower levels of PTSD symptoms.

It was emphasized that therapy paired with CBD accounts for decreased anxiety levels and is rather much more effective than just treating the patient with CBD.

Relieve ALS Symptoms

ALS-short for amyotrophic lateral sclerosis is a nervous system disease in which the nerve cells of the brain and spinal cord are highly affected. It can result in deterioration of muscle control. ALS is caused by a family history of the said disease.

In a 2019 study, research was conducted in which people with ALS were introduced to the combination of CBD and THC in doses that best suited their condition. As a result, people with extreme or moderate muscle stiffness reported that they felt a higher level of satisfaction.

Alleviate Arthritis Pain

Arthritis is a disease that deteriorates your bones and joints. Arthritis patients experience intense pain in the joints, loss of motion, inflammation, or stiffness.

Researchers conducted a study on a CBD-based botanical drug, Sativex, which was later approved in the United Kingdom. The study concluded that Sativex promoted significant relief from pain during any movement, improved the quality of sleep, and also suppressed the disease activity.

In 2018, a study observed that patients who were treated with a CBD gel did not experience much pain as compared to patients who were given the placebo. The dosage of CBD on the gel amounted to 250-500 milligrams.

The group of people who have applied the CBD gel with a 250-milligram dosage experienced more relief in their pain.

Helps with Diabetes Complications

Lastly, it has been found that CBD can reduce the complications caused by having higher levels of glucose.

In research conducted, 13 patients diagnosed with type 2 diabetes were required to not undergo any insulin treatment and were instead given CBD. To record the impact of CBD on patients in a more effective way, some of the patients were given a placebo.

It was found that patients who are given CBD have decreased levels of resistin and higher levels of hormones that ensure the extraction of insulin from the digested food.

The result was a clear indication that CBD can be utilized as a natural treatment for regulating insulin-related hormones.
